Fresh Cut Rose Care in 6 Easy Steps

FRESH CUT ROSE CARE IN 6 EASY STEPS

Roses are by far the number one selling flower every February. If you received roses as a gift or for yourself, they either come arranged or wrapped. No matter how they are presented or packaged, there are certain steps to get maximum vase life to enjoy your roses fully.

Here are six steps to you're cut rose care:

  1. First, you must make sure that you have a clean vase with water and flower preservatives. This will prevent bacteria growth. (Please see instructions for mixing the flower food.)

  2. Next, you're going to condition the roses by removing all leaves that may be underwater. This means any foliage that may fall under the water line. While holding the stems underwater in a sink or small plastic container, cut the stems about one inch with sharp shears at an angle.

  3. Immediately after the stems are cut, place your roses in the vase with an already prepared solution. Using the recommended amount will provide additional days of vase life.

  4. Temperature is the key to the lifespan of roses. Display your fresh-cut rose arrangement in a cool area out of direct sunlight, draft, fruits, or vegetables. Higher the temperature will shorten their life overall.

  5. Wilted roses may be revived by placing them under water. Submerge the entire rose under water for 15 minutes. The rose should absorb enough water to replenish itself. While submerged, cut off 1 inch of the bottom of the stem using sharp shears before adding it back to the vase. (You can dip the rose longer if needed.)

  6. Roses are thirsty flowers. It is important to check to see that the vase is full and preservative solution often. If you receive an arranged basket or other container, be sure floral foam materials are completely saturated daily with a mixture of flower food and water.

Don’t forget to repeat this process on your roses on Day 1, Day 3, and Day 5. Enjoy your roses for a week or two, depending on the breed.
