January Birth Flower - Carnation

January Birth Flower - Carnation

January’s birth flowers are the Carnations. The fragrant carnations are also known as Dianthus species. Over the years carnations have evolved to not just being your grandmother’s flower. Overtime, different colored carnations began to take their own meanings. With a huge variety of colors to choose from carnations can be the perfect gift for tons of occasions. Carnations are known for their dainty ruffled petals and a sweet fragrance. But don't let their delicate appearance fool you. Carnations are also easy to grow, very hearty, and among the longest-lasting cut flowers around. And when arranged tastefully they can be downright stunning.

I mean... let’s get real. They are making a comeback!

Here is how to take care of cut carnations in 3 steps:

  1. Make sure you use flower food to prolong the life of the bloom.

  2. Cut the stems at an angle. This will allow more water to enter the stem and remain with the stem.

  3. Change water frequently. Changing the water at least once every two or three days is best to keep bacteria to a minimum.
