Roses are by far the number one selling flower every February. If you received roses as a gift or for yourself, they either come arranged or wrapped. No matter how they are presented or packaged there are certain steps to follow to get maximum vase life to fully enjoy your roses.
Here are six steps to you're cut rose care:
-
First you must make sure that you have a clean vase with water and flower preservatives. This will prevent bacteria growth. (Please see instructions for mixing the flower food.)
-
Next you're going to condition the roses by removing all leaves that may be under water. This means any foliage that may fall under the water line. While holding the stems underwater in a sink or small plastic container, cut the stem about one inch with some sharp shears at an angle.
-
Immediately after the stems are cut, place your roses in the vase with already prepared solution. By using the recommended amount will provide additional days of vase life.
-
Temperature is the key to the lifespan of roses. Make sure to display your fresh cut rose arrangement in a cool area out of direct sunlight, draft, fruits, or vegetables. Higher the temperature will shorten their life overall.
-
Wilted roses may be revived by placing them under water. Submerge the entire rose under water for 15 minutes. The rose should absorb enough water to replenish itself. While submerged, cut off 1 inch of the bottom of the stem using sharp shears before adding it back to the vase. (You can submerge the rose longer if needed)
-
Roses are thirsty flowers. It is important to check to see that the vase is full and preservative solution often. If you receive an arranged basket or other container, be sure floral foam materials are completely saturated daily with the mixture of flower food and water.
Don’t forget to repeat this process on your roses Day 1, on Day 3 and again on Day 5. Enjoy your roses for a week of two depending on the breed.
